Buck Ramsey
Western Music - Cowboy Songs
Buck Ramsey was
born in New Home, Texas, January 9, 1938.
His poetry of traditional cowboy songs have been featured at the Smithsonian
Institution, and the Gene Autry Western Heritage Museum. The Academy of Western
Artists announced that, to honor Buck's memory the Poetry Book Award will
hereafter be called, "The Buck Ramsey Award." Buck’s work on "Anthem" has been
referred to as "the finest contemporary piece of writing in this tradition."
Buck came from a singing family, his four sisters sang gospel music all around
the Panhandle, while Buck sang with a band in high school. He learned to play
the guitar in his later years, but had played the piano for a good part of his life.
Buck was a cowboy, reporter, poet, cowboy singer-songwriter, and was active duty in the
Marines.
Buck received awards from the National Cowboy Hall of Fame for "Best Traditional
Song Album-1992/1994," a "National Heritage Master Artist Award-1995," the
"Lifetime Achievement Award and Best Poetry Book Award-1996" from the Academy
of Western Artists, and the "American Cowboy Culture Award for Western Music-1996."
