Don Edwards
Western Music - Cowboy Songs
Don Edwards is one of a
handful of cowboy musicians who is working hard to keep western music in the minds of the
public. Don took a shot at the larger country music scene, but his heart was always in
the music of the cowboys. Country music is definitely not western music, and
Don is one who takes care to point out the distinction. Whereas country music
is about heartaches, drinking, and cheating, western music is a celebration of the elements
of cowboy life - horses, riding, cowboying, friendship, and the land.
Don is a hot ticket on the cowboy poetry trail, and he recently released two solo
book/tape anthologies of cowboy music and poetry. Songs Of The Cowboy and Guitars
And Saddle Songs include classic as well as contemporary cowboy songs, and both have
been added to the Folklore Archives at the Library of Congress.
When he performs, Don sings alone without a backup band.
Don lives near Fort Worth, TX where he runs a few head of cows and breaks and trains
his own horses. Says Don, "I have cowboyed, working with cowboys doing day-work
on some of the big ranches in Texas and New Mexico. I try to do enough to keep
myself in perspective. But in no way am I the hand those working cowboys
are. I’m a whole lot more handy with a guitar than a rope."

"The cowboy don't always sing range songs, and many of
the old bands sang to tunes imported from the east whenever they could
get wind of 'em. We sang as much about broken loves as we did about
breaking horses."

One of the biggest problems with many contemporary collections
is that they are over produced in the typical Nashville approach. Well,
here are 32 cowboy songs that are, in Don Edwards parlance, "unproduced"
as simply as possible."
