Frankie McWhorter
Fiddle Music
Panhandle legend,
Frankie McWhorter, is a fiddler from Lipscomb, Texas. Frankie’s been a fiddle
player for just about as long as he’s been a cowboy. He grew up around Memphis
and started his musical career in the early 1950s with the Miller Brothers, a
popular western-swing band sponsored by a Wichita Falls furniture store. After
the Miller Brothers, Frankie caught on with Bob Wills and then drifted back home
to Memphis, where he went back to breaking horses and working in a gas station.
In 1986, McWhorter was inducted into the Nebraska Country Music Foundation
Hall of Fame, and in 1987 was inducted into the Western Swing Society Hall of Fame.
Lanny Fiel and Frankie McWhorter have released two documentary recordings
entitled The Ranch Dance Fiddle: Frankie McWhorter and Texas Sandman: Frankie
McWhorter. The recordings are sponsored by the Ranching Heritage Association in
conjunction with the Southwest Collection at Texas Tech University.

"McWhorter is such a master of his instrument that he makes it sound so much easier and
simple than it is."
