Gene Autry
Western Music & Cowboy Songs
Gene Autry was born
in Tioga, Texas on September 29, 1907.
Discovered by humorist Will Rogers, Autry spent more than 60 years in a
career that covered song writing and recording, radio shows, TV shows, movies, and even
major league baseball owner. He made over 600 recordings, writing, or co-writing more
than 300 songs. Gene had his first hit record, "That Silver-Haired Daddy of Mine"
in 1932. His film career began in 1934 with "In Old Santa Fe," and the followed the next
year by "Tumbling Tumble weeds," altogether appearing in more than 90 films. In 1929, he
performed nightly on a radio show in Tulsa, Oklahoma where he was known as "Oklahoma’s
Yodeling Cowboy." From 1940-1956 he performed on his weekly radio show, "The Melody Ranch."
Autry is the only entertainer to have five stars on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, one each for
radio, records, movies, television, and live performance including rodeo and theater
appearances.
Gene Autry died at his home in Studio City, California on October 2, 1998. He was 91
years old.

"Gene Autry" made a name for himself as a singing cowboy with
a particular interest in kids, and music for kids.
Some of his kids songs include;
"Here Comes Santa Claus," "Peter Cottontail," and "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer."
