Although Marty Robbins' recordings span several genres, his hero was Gene Autry, and his love was for cowboy music.  Robbins has written and recorded some of the best cowboy ballads ever produced.  Even with the popularity of rock 'n' roll in the 50s and 60s, Marty Robbins "El Paso" topped the music charts in 1960.  Some other great Marty Robbins ballad recordings include; "Big Iron," "El Paso City," "Master’s Call," "The Cowboy In The Continental Suit," "Running Gun," "Utah Carol," "Mr. Shorty," "They’re Hanging Me Tonight," "Saddle Tramp," "The Strawberry Roan," and many others.  Marty’s first big cowboy ballad, "The Hanging Tree," was the soundtrack for the 1959, Gary Cooper movie of the same name.
Marty Robbins "extended" version of "El Paso" was a huge success, as was the Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs album, which won many awards.
