Red Steagall
Western Music & Cowboy Poetry
Red Steagall has had many years
of experience in the recording business, and it really shows in this album.
Red's work is based on what he calls, "frontier-type sound," and his selection
for producer of this collection is Steve Gibson, a man who loves acoustic
music and understands it and bluegrass harmonies, the kind of harmonies
cowboys used to listen to. The songs are produced elegantly and simply,
without the unnecessary extra studio fill-in music that so many producers,
especially the Nashville types, seem to think are necessary.
Steagall has included both songs and
poems on this album. The poems are all his own. Red's poetry
is well written, and his message is pure cowboy. Several of these
songs were written by Steagall - "The Wagon Tongue," "One Empty Cot In
The Bunkhouse," "When The Cimarron Was Red and On The Rise." He Has
recorded these songs before, but this Warner Western release is a chance
for him to expose some of his best work to millions of people. And,
because his work is so authentically cowboy, Steagall has included a glossary
of tewmas to instruct the uneducated about such words as soddie, remuda,
string, hot roll, leggings, coosie, hoodlum, gut hooks, etc.
He's also recorded a couple tracks
written by others. "Dust" and "Dodge City" were written by Bob Morrison
and Eric Emerson. And Red teamed up with Rich O'Brien to write "Fort
Phantom Hill," and with Luke Reed and Billy Jo Foster on "Panhandle Wind."
This album is pure Steagall - simple,
classic, and good.
