Here's a wonder album of poems and songs expressing the spiritual side of the American West. As Red says, "I don't want to say that my way is the only way to look at it. All I want to do is express my feelings about my maker and how He appears to me."
"A Long Way From Montana" is a beautiful tune of spiritual yearning. Another melodic and wonderful song is "He Was There," reflecting the presence of God in all the daily things a cowboy does and sees.
There's not a bad song here. Red has a great way of translating cowboy feelings into very singable music, and the message in each is clear and good. This Steagall album is almost a cowboy guide for living.
Red is known for the accuracy and authenticity of his poetic perceptions, and the poems in this album are no exception. Nobody can tell a cowboy story in rhyme better than he can. "The Fence That Me and Shorty Built" is a nice poem about a young man learning lessons about doing things the right way, the cowboy way. Another poem, "Paw-Paw," is about a granddad proudly helping his small grandson learn to rope and be like his grandpa.
"The Real America" is about the people who live the western way - spirit and values of family and community - people who work and are responsible and honest. These are the people we all want to be and know.
Working cowboys listen to Red Steagall albums because Red tells it right. You can't go wrong with this one.
