Sons Of The San Joaquin
Western Music & Cowboy Songs

On this album, the Sons of the San Joaquin - Jack, Joe, and Lon Hannah, have recorded a number of songs that were written by some of the original Sons of the Pioneers for the Charles Starett and Roy Rogers movies in which the Sons of the Pioneers appeared. And many of these songs were never commercially recorded. Among the movie songs are "Yippi-Yi your Troubles Away," "Headin' For The Home Corral," "Song of the Bandit," Ridin' Home," and "Empty Saddles," which was featured in the 1936 Bing Crosby movie, Rhythm On The Range.
One can't praise too highly the incredibly beautiful voices of these three men. Each has great range, fullness, and melody and together they provide the spectrum from rich tenor to deep bass vocals. Any one of them could perform solo and find success, but, as a group, their blended harmonies are probably the best you'll ever hear.
An extra treat, on Jennie Lou Carson's pretty song "Down Where the Rio Flows," is a Spanish language recitation and cameo appearance by Ranger Doug Green, of another great western harmony group, Riders in the Sky.
This album is better than the Sons' first warner release, because this time their voices aren't covered up by excessive instrumental accompaniment. And, they've recorded old songs that many of us have never heard before. It is great to hear fresh material.
Though they were inspired by the Sons of the Pioneers, and though they recorded many Pioneers songs, the Hannahs definitely have a sound of their own, stronger and more musical than that of the original Pioneers. These guys are special, and their music demands attention.
