Sons Of The San Joaquin
Western Music & Cowboy Songs
The remarkable Hannah family has produced what may be their best recording yet.
Not only is this collection loaded with Jack Hannah original songs, which
are as good or better than any of the romantic western material that was
recorded by the Sons of the Pioneers, but these songs are performed by
better singers and musicians.
No group (past or present) in western
music can match the beautiful voices and harmonies of Jack, Joe, and Lon
Hannah, and they are backed up by probably the best guitar man in the business,
Rich O'Brien, who also co-produced this effort.
If someone wanted to create a big-production
western musical, like such classics as Oklahoma or Paint Your
Wagon, they could just about do it using these songs. These are
"big" songs, with melody and message that glorify the legend of the cowboy
life.
"Charlie and the Boys" is Jack Hannah's
tribute to the men who went up the trail. "Sierra Nevada" and "California"
extoll the virtues of the Hannahs' home state. they also honor Montana
with "God Gave The Cowboy Montana" and the West in general with " The West,"
a quality Baxter Black poem that Jack's talent has molded into a powerful
anthem.
Two songs, "Rough String Rider," from
a Homer Bryant poem, and "Unbroke Hoss" give a thoughtful, and in the case
of the later, lightly humorous, look at what it's like to ride rough ranch
horses.
"Watch Him" is a complicated but well-written
song that reflects the Hannahs' deep Christian religious beliefs, and "Sing
One For The Cowboy," from a Darrell Arnold poem, laments the passing of
the Wild West.
The Hannahs round out the album with
Deuce Spriggins' "Trail to San Antone," Bob Nolan's not-often-recorded
"Still Water Pool," and Stuart Hamblen's classic "Texas Plains."
This is wonderful western music.
