Stephanie Davis
Western Music & Cowboy Songs
Any Person who can use
the word "epiglottis" in a song, and make it the only logical word that will fit in
a very singable song has to be an exceptional talent. Stephanie Davis has that level
of ability. She is a fantastic song writer who has managed to escape the stifling
confines of the Nashville Song Factory and is now soaring free, writing light, catchy,
tuneful songs that express her own bright personality and joy for living.
Stephanie seems to have done things in twos on this album. It includes two
danceable swing tunes, "Somethin’ ‘Bout Montana" and "Yodel Blues," this later is
the one that "epiglottis" appears on and on which guest performer ‘Ranger’ Doug Green,
of Riders in the Sky fame, does the quality yodeling.
There are two change-of-seasons songs, "Crocus in the Snow," a melancholy song
about a woman and son starting a new life, and "Turning to the Light," a southern
spiritual style song about changing one’s life in the spring.
And there are two clever and funny poems, "Talkin’ Harvest Time Blues," about
planting one’s own garden, and "The Spotted Ass," about a misunderstanding based
on cultural differences. Hilarious both.
"Just a Cup of Coffee" is a perceptive song about a woman trying to talk
herself out of seeing an old boyfriend. "Some Things Cost Too Much" is Stephanie’s
sweet autobiographical song about the costs of being a Music City songwriter. There
is also a delightful singing duel, "You Been a Friend to Me," sung with Asleep
At The Wheel’s Ray Benson. And the album ends with "Good Night Little Cowpup,"
a lovely, tender and sweet tribute to a ranch puppy.
Buy this one for sure. You’ll have no regrets.
